Lesson 4. Киім: clothes and sizes

I can name my clothes and their colors, say “I put on” and “I take off”, answer the question “Өлшеміңіз қандай?”, and ask for an item in a store.

Киім: what I'm wearing

Киім: what I'm wearing

Why: to say what you're wearing, choose something in a store, and ask about the size. A color and “this” stand before the thing and never change: мына қолшатыр, қара қолшатыр, мына қара қолшатыр — also in the plural: қара қолшатырлар. To put on, to wear — кию (киемін, киесің, киеді); to take off — шешу (шешемін, шешеді). Мен күрте киемін “I wear a jacket”; a definite thing takes the ending: Мына күртені киіңіз. Аяқкиімді шешіңіз. “My thing”: in words ending in -к, -қ, -п the stem changes, as in кітап → кітабым (see the table): көйлек → көйлегім, шұлық → шұлығым, қолғап → қолғабым. In a store: Өлшеміңіз қандай? “What's your size?” The seller may say: Бұл сізге жарасады “It suits you”; сәнді — “fashionable”. English “socks”, “gloves”, “glasses” are plural, but Kazakh usually keeps шұлық, қолғап, көзілдірік in the singular: менің шұлығым “my socks”. The words аяқкиім “shoes”, баскиім “headwear”, and мойынорағыш “scarf” are each written as one word. Common mistakes: • ×қаралар қолшатырлар → қара қолшатырлар; • ×менің қолғапым → менің қолғабым.
