I can book a room by phone and spell out my last name, check in at the front desk of an Italian hotel, ask about breakfast and the price, say that something in the room doesn't work, and arrange my checkout.
In albergo
The hotel: booking, the front desk, a complaint about the room
Three steps: booking by phone, checking in at the reception desk, and a question or complaint about the room. Use Lei here too.
Booking: “Vorrei prenotare una camera doppia per due notti, dal 3 al 5 maggio.” Count NIGHTS, not days: per una notte, per due notti, per tre notti.
The table shows the three room types: singola, doppia, matrimoniale.
“Quanto costa la camera?” — “Novanta euro a notte.” “La colazione è inclusa?” — “Sì, dalle sette alle dieci.”
At the desk: “Ho una prenotazione a nome Mancini.” — “Come si scrive, scusi?” — “M come Milano, A come Ancona, N come Napoli, C come Como, I come Imola.” You can leave your luggage (il bagaglio) at the desk if the room isn't ready.
A machine doesn't “lavora”, it “funziona”: “Il riscaldamento non funziona”, “L'aria condizionata non funziona”. For what's missing: non c'è (see the table).
The receptionist says (just understand these): “Per quante notti?” · “Un documento, per favore.” · “Ecco la chiave, camera dodici, al secondo piano.” In a US building, al secondo piano is the third floor.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “una camera per due giorni” → “una camera per due notti”
• NOT “Il riscaldamento non lavora” → “Il riscaldamento non funziona” (lavorare is for people)
• NOT “Voglio una camera doppia” → “Vorrei una camera doppia”
• NOT “La colazione è incluso” → “La colazione è inclusa” (agreement)
Three rooms
The name of the room and what's in it.
| Room | What's in it |
|---|---|
| la camera singola | one bed, for one guest |
| la camera doppia | two separate beds, for two |
| la camera matrimoniale | one large bed, for two |
What to say if something's wrong
The set phrase and when to say it.
| In Italian | When to say it |
|---|---|
| Il riscaldamento non funziona. | an appliance doesn't work |
| In camera non c'è il sapone. | there isn't any at all |
| Nella camera non c'è il cuscino. | an item is missing |
