Lesson 5. Ավտոբուսով, ընկերոջս հետ — the instrumental and the postposition հետ

I can say how I travel and with whom: ավտոբուսով, մետրոյով, ոտքով — and ընկերոջս հետ; I can ask where to get off and ask for a ticket.

By what and with whom: -ով and հետ

What for: to say how you travel and who with. “By” a vehicle is the ending -ով, for example ավտոբուսով (“by bus”), գնացքով, տաքսիով. This is the instrumental. After -ա, -ո it is -յով, for example մեքենայով, մետրոյով. “On foot” is the set word ոտքով. To ask: Ինչպե՞ս ես գնում աշխատանքի։ “With” a person is not an ending but the postposition հետ after the familiar “whose” form: Իվանի հետ, ընկերոջս հետ. The question is ո՞ւմ հետ. English says “by bus” and “with a friend”; Armenian uses -ով for the first and հետ for the second. On public transportation: նստել — to get on (ավտոբուս եմ նստում), իջնել — to get off (ավտոբուսից եմ իջնում), հասնել — to get to, reach. Ask for a ticket with words you know: … տոմս, խնդրում եմ; … տոմս եմ ուզում; Կարելի՞ է … տոմս։ ճանապարհ is written with հ at the end, but that հ is silent. Written ջ, heard [tʃʰ]: իջնել. Common mistakes: • NOT “ընկերով”, “Իվանով” → ընկերոջս հետ, Իվանի հետ. • NOT “ավտոբուսի հետ եմ գնում” → ավտոբուսով. • NOT “հետ Մանեի” → Մանեի հետ (the postposition goes after the word). • NOT “մետրոով” → մետրոյով.

By what: the ending -ով

After -ա and -ո, յ comes before the ending; in տաքսի the letter ի stays.
