Lesson 1. What will happen tomorrow: futuro imperfecto

I can talk about the future: make predictions and promises — mañana lloverá, el año que viene tendré más tiempo.

1 / 13

What will happen later

Futuro imperfecto (the future tense) — the tense of predictions and promises

The future tense (futuro) is for predictions and promises — where English says “will”: what will happen tomorrow, in a year, someday. A promise: Te prometo que vendré. Time expressions point to it: mañana, pasado mañana, la semana que viene, el mes que viene, el año que viene, dentro de dos días, pronto, algún día. The forms are in the first table. The ending goes on the whole infinitive and is the same for all three conjugations: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án. Nothing is cut off the infinitive — the main difference from the past tenses. Every form has an accent mark except nosotros: hablaré, hablarás, hablará, hablaremos (no accent mark), hablaréis, hablarán. Six common verbs change their stem, and the endings stay the same (second table): tener → tendr-, poder → podr-, salir → saldr-, venir → vendr-, saber → sabr-, hacer → har-. The stem change of the present tense does not happen here: volver → volveré, empezar → empezaré. The form comes from the infinitive. Common mistakes: • NOT “¿Me ayudarás?” as a request — correct: ¿Me ayudas? • NOT “hacerá calor” — correct: hará calor. • NOT “tenré tiempo” — correct: tendré tiempo. • NOT “hablaremós” — correct: hablaremos; nosotros has no accent mark. • NOT “Vamos a viviré en Madrid” — correct: Viviremos en Madrid.
Futuro (the future tense): one set of endings for all conjugations

The ending is added to the whole infinitive; nothing is dropped. Every form has an accent mark except nosotros.
