Meeting people: names and forms of address

Meeting people: names and forms of address

What for: to meet people — say your name, ask someone's name, and address a person politely. Names come in set phrases; learn them as a whole: Իմ անունը Օլգա է — “my name is Olga”. To ask a friend: Քո անունն ի՞նչ է; formally: Ձեր անունն ի՞նչ է. In these phrases անուն has an ending: անունը, and before ի՞նչ, անունն; learn the phrase as a whole; this ending comes in the next lesson. In reply to an introduction: Շատ հաճելի է — “nice to meet you”; Հաճելի է ծանոթանալ — “pleased to meet you”. Forms of address. To a friend: the first name, with դու: Բարև, Նարե. To an older person, or in a formal setting: դուք, and պարոն (“Mr.”, to a man) or տիկին (“Ms.”, to a woman) before the last or first name, with a small letter: պարոն Պողոսյան, տիկին Գայանե. Ազգանուն — “last name”. Common mistakes: • NOT “Իմ անուն Օլգա” → Իմ անունը Օլգա է (the whole phrase, with the linking verb). • NOT “Տիկին Գայանե, ինչպե՞ս ես” → Տիկին Գայանե, ինչպե՞ս եք (պարոն and տիկին go only with դուք). • NOT “Պողոսյան պարոն” → պարոն Պողոսյան.

Where you're from: -ից
Where you're from: add -ից (“from”) to the name of a country or city: Ռուսաստանից, Երևանից, Գյումրիից. After the vowels -ա and -ո, a յ comes before the ending: Մոսկվայից, Տոկիոյից. This is how you name your own city too. “I'm from America” — Ես Ամերիկայից եմ: the linking verb is in its place, at the end. To ask a friend: Որտեղի՞ց ես; formally: Որտեղի՞ց եք. Many countries end in -ստան or -իա: see the table. It also has the nationality words you know from the last lesson. Four words for forms and conversation: երկիր — country, քաղաք — city, գյուղ — village, մայրաքաղաք — capital. One more: արտասահման — “abroad”. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ես Ամերիկա եմ” → Ես Ամերիկայից եմ (“from” is an ending after the word). • NOT “Մոսկվաից” → Մոսկվայից (after -ա, with յ). • NOT “Որտեղի՞ց ես, պարոն Արթուր” → Որտեղի՞ց եք, պարոն Արթուր.
