Lesson 4. İşten sonra, beşe kadar: the postpositions önce, sonra, and kadar
I can say what I do before and after work, until what time I'm busy, and from what time to what time I study: işten sonra, beşe kadar, dokuzdan beşe kadar.
Before, after, until: the postpositions önce, sonra, and kadar
Before, after, until: the postpositions önce, sonra, and kadar
English “before”, “after”, and “until” come before the noun. Turkish postpositions come after it and choose its case: işten sonra, beşe kadar.
önce means “before” and sonra “after”. The word before them takes the ablative (“from”) ending: yemekten önce — “before the meal”, tatilden sonra — “after the vacation”. The familiar öğleden sonra is built the same way.
kadar means “until, as far as”. The word before it takes the dative (“to”) ending: beşe kadar — “until five”, bankaya kadar — “as far as the bank”. “From … to …”: dokuzdan beşe kadar.
A length of time takes no ending: iki gün önce — “two days ago”, iki gün sonra — “in two days”. On their own, önce … sonra … mean “first … then …”.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “sonra iş”, NOT “işin sonra” → işten sonra
• NOT “beş kadar” → beşe kadar
• NOT “önce iki gün” → iki gün önce
Three time postpositions
“From … to …” — dokuzdan beşe kadar. A length of time takes no ending: iki gün önce, iki gün sonra.
| Postposition | The ending of the word before it | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| önce | -dan / -den / -tan / -ten | yemekten önce | before a meal |
| sonra | the same as with önce | tatilden sonra | after vacation |
| kadar | -a / -e / -ya / -ye | beşe kadar | until five |
