I can say what a day was and what a place was like: “yesterday was a day off,” “it wasn't quiet there.”
Was and wasn't: でした
Was and wasn't: でした
This lesson: what a day was and what a place was like, as in “yesterday was a day off” or “it wasn't quiet there.”
With a noun and a な-adjective, です carries the past. The four forms are in the table: です → でした, じゃないです → じゃなかったです. A question ends in でしたか: やすみでしたか.
The forms are the same for both: かいぎでした, しずかでした, べんりじゃなかったです. The word itself doesn't change.
Compare with the last lesson. An い-adjective changes itself: たのしかったです. A な-adjective and a noun stay as they are; the です next to them becomes でした. Careful with きれい: it ends in い, but it's a な-adjective. Degree words work as before: あまりしずかじゃなかったです.
English “wasn't” is “was” + “not”, but in Japanese the negative changes as a whole: じゃなかったです.
Common mistakes:
• NOT しずかかったです → しずかでした.
• NOT やすみかったです → やすみでした.
• NOT しずかくなかったです → しずかじゃなかったです.
• NOT しずかじゃないでした → しずかじゃなかったです.
• NOT たのしいでした → たのしかったです.
The four forms of です
Nouns and な-adjectives have the same forms: です changes.
| What you say | やすみ (day off) | しずか(な) |
|---|---|---|
| is | やすみです | しずかです |
| isn't | やすみじゃないです | しずかじゃないです |
| was | やすみでした | しずかでした |
| wasn't | やすみじゃなかったです | しずかじゃなかったです |
What changes in the past
If the word ends in い and is an い-adjective, the word itself changes.
| Which word | What changes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| い-adjective | the word itself: かったです | あつかったです |
| な-adjective | です → でした | べんりでした |
| noun | です → でした | いしゃでした |
