Lesson 4. Ի՞նչ արժե — prices, weight, and “I need”

I can ask the price and understand an answer with hundreds and thousands, ask for a kilo or five pieces, say “I need” and “I don't need”, and pay: Ի՞նչ արժե — Ինձ մեկ կիլոգրամ միս է պետք.

How much is it: prices, hundreds, and thousands

How much is it: prices, hundreds, and thousands

What for: to ask the price, understand the answer, ask for the amount you need, and pay. Asking the price: Ի՞նչ արժե …? or Ինչքա՞ն է …? The answer: … դրամ է or … դրամ արժե. The form արժե is ready-made, with no -ում. Hundreds and thousands: a number + հարյուր, a number + հազար, written apart (the table); “a hundred” and “a thousand” are just հարյուր, հազար. After a number the word doesn't change. Amounts: a number + a measure + a word, all with no endings: մեկ կիլոգրամ միս, երկու շիշ հյութ, վեց հատ ձու; մի հատ is “one piece”. In speech կիլոգրամ is shortened to կիլո. Asking: … տվեք, խնդրում եմ. More words for the exercises: զեղչ — discount, հերթ — line (of people), լիտր — liter, գրամ — gram (a thousand grams = a kilogram). Paying: կանխիկ — in cash (usually no ending; կանխիկով works too), քարտով — by card (the -ով of ավտոբուսով). One word, two meanings: գնում եմ is “I'm going” (գնալ) and “I'm buying” (գնել). Տուն եմ գնում — I'm going home; հաց եմ գնում — I'm buying bread. Common mistakes: • NOT “երկուհարյուր” → երկու հարյուր (hundreds are written apart). • NOT “հինգ հարյուր դրամներ” → հինգ հարյուր դրամ. • NOT “երկու շիշ կաթի” → երկու շիշ կաթ (after a measure the word doesn't change).
Hundreds and thousands

The number and the word հարյուր or հազար are written separately.

I need: Ինձ … է պետք
What for: to tell the seller what you need and what you don't. The pattern: to whom (ինձ, քեզ, նրան, մեզ, ձեզ, նրանց, or a word with -ին) + what is needed + է պետք. What you need stands right before է; պետք comes last. English says “I need”; Armenian says “to me … is needed”: Ինձ, not Ես. The thing itself stays in the dictionary form. A word with -ս, -դ takes the familiar “whose” form: տատիկս → տատիկիս. Not needed: պետք չէ. Questions: Ձեզ ի՞նչ է պետք — what do you need? Ձեզ շի՞շ է պետք — do you need a bottle? Common mistakes: • NOT “Ես ժամանակ է պետք” → Ինձ ժամանակ է պետք (to whom: ինձ). • NOT “Ինձ ժամանակ պետք” → Ինձ ժամանակ է պետք (the linking verb is needed). • NOT “Ինձ շաքար չէ պետք” → Ինձ շաքար պետք չէ.
