What we review
What we review
The module's five topics fit together. Skim them before the exercises.
• -er verbs: the endings -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent; only -ons and -ez are heard. The stem changes in writing, for example: nous mangeons, j'achète.
• Negation: ne … pas and ne … jamais around the conjugated verb, n' before a vowel; after a negative, un, une, and des become de, but after être the article stays.
• Country and city: le, la, l', les; en + feminine, au + masculine, aux + plural, à + a city; where from: de, d', du, des.
• In town: il y a and the negative il n'y a pas de; prepositions of place dans, sur, sous, devant, derrière, entre … et …, and compound ones ending in de.
• Where to and where from: à + le gives au, à + les gives aux, de + le gives du, de + les gives des; the verbs aller, venir, and prendre; transportation with en or à.
Two words around the verb
ne and pas wrap around the conjugated verb; after a negative with any verb except être, un/une/des becomes de.
| Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|
| Elle voyage. | Elle ne voyage pas. |
| Ils ont une voiture. | Ils n'ont pas de voiture. |
| Ce sont des étudiants. | Ce ne sont pas des étudiants. |
In or to ↔ from
Before a city it's always à and de, whatever the country next to it.
| What it is | In or to | From |
|---|---|---|
| feminine country | en France | de France |
| country starting with a vowel | en Italie | d'Italie |
| masculine country | au Japon | du Japon |
| plural | aux États-Unis | des États-Unis |
| city | à Paris | de Paris |
Contractions: à and de with the article
Only le and les contract; la and l' stay as they are.
| Preposition | + le | + la | + l' | + les |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| à | au marché | à la gare | à l'hôtel | aux toilettes |
| de | du musée | de la poste | de l'hôtel | des toilettes |
