To ask the time: ¿Qué hora es? One o'clock is Es la una — the only hour with es la. All the others: Son las dos, Son las siete, Son las diez. La/las stand for la hora/las horas. Up to half past, add minutes with y; after it, subtract from the next hour with menos: son las tres y cuarto, son las cuatro menos veinte. On the hour: en punto. Time of day goes at the end, instead of a.m. / p.m.: a las ocho de la mañana, a las cinco de la tarde, a las once de la noche. Noon is el mediodía. An event's time takes a and ser: ¿A qué hora es la clase? — Es a las nueve. For a schedule, de … a …: el horario es de nueve a dos. Timetables use 24-hour time: 15:40 — las quince cuarenta. 21–29 are one word; 22, 23, 26 have an accent mark: veintidós, veintitrés, veintiséis. From 31, y joins tens and units: treinta y uno. Exactly 100 is cien; 101 and up, ciento: ciento uno. Before a feminine noun, hundreds end in -as: doscientas páginas. Three hundreds are irregular: quinientos, setecientos, novecientos. A thousand is mil. Common mistakes: • NOT “Son la una” — correct: Es la una. • NOT “Es las tres” — correct: Son las tres. • NOT “Es en las nueve” — correct: Es a las nueve. • NOT “cincocientos” — correct: quinientos. • NOT “cien uno” — correct: ciento uno. • NOT “dos miles” — correct: dos mil. • NOT “doscientos páginas” — correct: doscientas páginas.
