I can talk about my hobbies — 음악을 좋아해요, 춤을 싫어해요, 한국 노래를 듣고 싶어요 — and ask: 무슨 영화를 좋아해요?
What I like: 좋아하다 and -고 싶어요
What I like: 좋아하다 and -고 싶어요
Hobbies: 취미가 뭐예요? 좋아하다 is “to like” (also for English “I love movies”); the thing you like takes 을 / 를: 영화를 좋아해요. The same goes for 싫어하다 “to dislike”. 무슨 is “what kind of”: 무슨 음악을 좋아해요? 제일 is “most of all”. The activities and their verbs are in the table. In conversation 뭐를 shortens to 뭘.
-고 싶어요 is “want to”: the stem + -고 싶어요 — 보고 싶어요, 먹고 싶어요; the stem doesn't change. Use it about yourself and to ask the person you're talking to: 뭘 보고 싶어요? Not about other people: they take a different form, taught later.
In 듣다 “to listen”, ㄷ turns into ㄹ before a vowel: 들어요, 들었어요. Before a consonant ㄷ stays: 듣고 싶어요, 듣지 않아요. These are ㄷ-irregular verbs; two more come in module 5.
싫어요! is a short “I don't want to”. 마리 is the counter for animals: 고양이 두 마리. 부르다 “to sing” has a special form, 불러요; its rule comes in module 5.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “음악이 좋아해요” → 음악을 좋아해요.
• NOT “듣어요” → 들어요.
• NOT “들고 싶어요” → 듣고 싶어요.
• NOT “두 고양이” → 고양이 두 마리.
The activity and its verb
The activity takes 을 / 를; each activity has its own verb.
| What | Which verb | In English |
|---|---|---|
| 영화 | 보다 | to watch a movie |
| 음악 | 듣다 | to listen to music |

| 그림 | 그리다 | to draw |
| 춤 | 추다 (= 춤추다) | to dance |
| 요리 | 하다 | to cook |
| 운동 | 하다 | to exercise |
ㄷ before a vowel → ㄹ
In 듣다, ㄷ changes only before a vowel.

| past | 들었어요 |
| “I want” | 듣고 싶어요 |
| “not” | 듣지 않아요 |
