Lesson 3. Volere and preferire: I want and I prefer

I can say what I want (voglio un gelato, voglio mangiare) and what I prefer (preferisco la pizza al panino), and choose the polite Vorrei instead of the demanding Voglio.

Voglio, vorrei, preferisco

Voglio, vorrei, preferisco

This lesson teaches you to say what you want and to choose between two things. Volere is irregular: voglio, vuoi, vuole, vogliamo, volete, vogliono. See the table. After volere comes an infinitive (Voglio mangiare) or a noun (Voglio un gelato), with no preposition in between: English “want to eat” is Voglio mangiare, with no word for “to”. At a bar or a restaurant, say Vorrei instead of Voglio: “Voglio un caffè” sounds like a demand, as “I want a coffee” does in English. Vorrei (“I'd like”) is a polite set phrase; no need to take it apart. In conversation you need three forms of preferire: preferisco, preferisci, preferisce. The other forms come later. Choosing between two: “Preferisco la pizza al panino”. As in English “I prefer X to Y”, the second thing takes “to”: the preposition a, joined with the article: al panino (masc.), alla pizza, all'insalata (fem.). Common mistakes: • NOT “Voglio di mangiare” → “Voglio mangiare”. • NOT “Preferisco la pizza che il panino” → “…al panino”. • NOT “Loro vogliano un gelato” → “Loro vogliono un gelato”. • NOT “Io preferisce il pesce” → “Io preferisco il pesce”.

The forms don't follow a rule — learn them by heart.
