Lesson 5. Otobüsle, arkadaşımla, senin için: the postpositions ile and için

I can say how and with whom I travel and whom I do something for — otobüsle, arkadaşımla, senin için — without mixing up getting on and getting off: otobüse biniyorum, otobüsten iniyorum.

With whom, by what, for whom: the postpositions ile and için

With whom, by what, for whom: the postpositions ile and için

ile means “with (someone)” and “by (bus, train)”, için means “for”. Both are postpositions: they come after the word, where English puts “with” and “for” before it. ile is usually joined to the word: after a consonant -la / -le, after a vowel -yla / -yle, as in the table: vapurla, çantayla, abimle, Hatice'yle. Written apart is also correct: vapur ile. The stress doesn't fall on -la. Questions: Ne ile? — “How? By what?”, Kiminle? — “Who with?” Pronouns before ile and için take the benim, senin form: benimle, seninle, onunla, bizimle, sizinle; benim için, senin için. Only onlar doesn't change: onlarla, onlar için. A noun before için takes no extra ending: kardeşim için. Get on a vehicle: -a binmek, arabaya biniyorum. Get off: -dan inmek, arabadan iniyorum. English says “get on the bus”, but Turkish never uses -da here. Common mistakes: • NOT “otobüste biniyorum” → otobüse biniyorum • NOT “otobüste gidiyorum” (meaning “I'm going on the bus”) → otobüsle gidiyorum • NOT “ben ile” → benimle • NOT “için sen” → senin için
The ending -la / -le: with whom and by what

Written separately is also correct: vapur ile. The stress doesn't fall on -la / -le.
