I can say whom I see, know, invite, and wait for, and I won't confuse a person with a thing: Հայկին եմ տեսնում, ավտոբուս եմ տեսնում.
Whom I see and what I see
Whom I see and what I see
What for: to say whom you see, know, love, invite, and wait for.
A two-line rule. A thing as the object takes no -ին, for example ավտոբուս եմ տեսնում. A person as the object takes the same form as “to whom?”: Հայկին եմ տեսնում, Օլգային, եղբորս. A word with -ս or -դ takes the familiar “whose” form, with no -ին: մայրիկս → մայրիկիս, հայրս → հորս. The pronouns are the same six: ինձ, քեզ, նրան, մեզ, ձեզ, նրանց.
English changes only pronouns (him, her, them): “I see Hayk”, but “I see him”. Armenian marks every person who is the object, names and nouns too, with the “to whom?” form.
Questions: about a person ո՞ւմ (whom?), about a thing ի՞նչ (what?).
A special verb: սպասել, “to wait for”. With it, both a person and a thing take -ին, and there is no word for “for”: ընկերոջս եմ սպասում, ավտոբուսին եմ սպասում.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Հայկ եմ տեսնում” → Հայկին եմ տեսնում (a person takes -ին).
• NOT “սուրճին եմ սիրում” → սուրճ եմ սիրում (a thing takes no -ին).
• NOT “Ես նա լսում եմ” → Ես նրան լսում եմ.
• NOT “մայրիկդին” → մայրիկիդ (after -ս, -դ, the “whose” form).
A person or a thing
A person takes the “to whom?” form; a thing has no -ին. With the verb սպասել, a thing takes -ին too.
| Verb | Person | Thing |
|---|---|---|
| տեսնել | Հայկին եմ տեսնում | ավտոբուս եմ տեսնում |
| սիրել | քեզ եմ սիրում | սուրճ եմ սիրում |
| ճանաչել | Նարեին եմ ճանաչում | քաղաքը լավ եմ ճանաչում |
| նայել | երեխային եմ նայում | ֆիլմ եմ նայում |
| սպասել | ընկերոջս եմ սպասում | ավտոբուսին եմ սպասում |
