Lesson 6. Мерекелер: holidays, good wishes, and invitations

I can wish someone a happy birthday or a happy holiday, formally and informally, invite someone over, say who a gift is for and what a conversation is about, and say when a holiday is: at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the month.

Мерекелер: congratulating, inviting, wishing

Мерекелер: congratulating, inviting, wishing

Good wishes are set phrases: • Туған күніңізбен! — Happy birthday! (literally “with your birthday”) Жаңа жылыңызбен! — Happy New Year! To a friend: Туған күніңмен! • … құтты болсын! — a wish after the name of the holiday: Мереке құтты болсын! — Happy holiday! The reply: Рақмет! Inviting: Сізді қонаққа шақырамын. — I'm inviting you over. “You” is the object here, so it is сізді. The words үшін and туралы are postpositions: unlike English “for” and “about”, they come after the word, not before it. • үшін — “for”: сіз үшін, балалар үшін. • туралы — “about”: мереке туралы, отбасым туралы. Бәрі — “everyone, everything”; as in English “everyone sings”, the verb is in the third person: Бәрі ән айтады. When: айдың басында — at the beginning of the month, ортасында — in the middle, соңында — at the end. Asking what someone likes: Сізге қай мереке ұнайды? Common mistakes: • דүшін сіз”, דтуралы мереке” → сіз үшін, мереке туралы. • ×“Сіз тойға шақырамын” → Сізді тойға шақырамын.
Good wishes: formal and to a friend

With мырза, ханым, аға, апай: only the middle column.
