I can say where I was born and lived, where I studied and worked, understand a simple résumé, and answer open questions about my story.
Moja história: where I was born, lived, and studied
Moja história: where I was born, lived, and studied
Why: to tell your own story (where you were born, lived, studied, and worked, when and why you came) and to understand someone else's short résumé.
You know the form: the l-form and som in second position. With sa, som comes first: som, then sa: “Narodil som sa…”, “Vrátila som sa…”. English “I was born” is Narodil som sa / Narodila som sa, a verb with sa. A question with vy takes the plural l-form, even to one person: “Kde ste sa narodili?”, “Kde ste žili?”.
prísť (to come, to arrive): prišiel, prišla, prišli, like išiel. Recognize these by meaning: rozumieť → rozumel (understood), stretnúť sa → stretol, stretla (met).
Write the year in figures: “v roku 1998”; you don't need to read it aloud yet. Recognize the date “prvého septembra” as “on September 1”.
A résumé has five sections: they are in the table. život means “life”.
Length ≠ stress: spokojný, základná have the stress on the first syllable; the long ý and á at the end are just longer.
Common mistakes:
• דNarodila sa som v Trnave” → “Narodila som sa v Trnave” (som comes before sa).
• דNarodil som v Petrohrade” — without sa it means “gave birth”; say “Narodil som sa”.
• דJa sa vrátila v máji” — som is needed with ja too: “Vrátila som sa v máji”.
My story: a question with vy and an answer about yourself
A question with vy takes the plural l-form, even to one person.
| Question with vy | Answer: he | Answer: she |
|---|---|---|
| Kde ste sa narodili? | Narodil som sa v Nitre, v lete. | Narodila som sa v Nitre, v lete. |
| Kde ste žili? | Žil som vo Viedni. | Žila som vo Viedni. |
| Kedy ste sa vrátili? | Vrátil som sa v máji. | Vrátila som sa v máji. |
| Prečo ste prišli na Slovensko? | Prišiel som sem pracovať. | Prišla som sem študovať. |
A simple résumé: five sections
Date ranges are written in figures with a dash: 2012 – 2016.
| Section | Translation | What goes there |
|---|---|---|
| Vzdelanie | education | schools and university, years: 2012 – 2016 |
| Prax | work experience | where you worked and what your job was |
| Jazyky | languages | which languages you speak |
| Zručnosti | skills | what you can do |
| Záujmy | interests, hobbies | what you do in your free time |
