Koľko je hodín? The hour and ordinal numbers

Koľko je hodín? The hour and ordinal numbers

Why: to ask the time and say what time you get up, have breakfast, and have lunch. What time is it: Koľko je hodín? — literally “how many hours”. Both hodina and the verb change: je jedna hodina; sú dve, tri, štyri hodiny; je päť … dvanásť hodín. The table is next to this text. At what time: O koľkej? The answer is o + the -ej form of the ordinal, not the plain number: piaty → o piatej, siedmy → o siedmej (but o jednej). Days take v, hours take o: v pondelok o druhej. Half and quarter: pol + the next hour, counting toward it (English counts past the hour before): pol piatej = 4:30. štvrť na + the next hour: štvrť na deväť = 8:15. A timetable writes 4.30, and people also say štyri tridsať. Ordinals: prvý, druhý, tretí … dvanásty change like adjectives: prvý deň, prvá hodina, prvé cvičenie; tretí has tretia, tretie. Words: večer “evening”, večerať “to have dinner”, večera “dinner”. hodina is “hour” and “class”; “time” is čas (lesson 5). The stress is on the first syllable; the mark over a letter is length: dvanásty, vstávam. Common mistakes: • × “v päť” → “o piatej”. • × “Je dve hodiny” → “Sú dve hodiny”. • × “Sú päť hodiny” → “Je päť hodín”. • × “o sedem” → “o siedmej”. • × “Dobrá večera!” as an evening greeting → “Dobrý večer!” (večera is dinner).
