Plans: the future tense in -acak

Plans: the future tense in -acak

Why: to talk about plans and what will surely happen. Time words: yarın “tomorrow”, gelecek hafta “next week”, iki gün sonra “in two days”, yakında “soon”. Form: stem + -acak / -ecek + personal ending, as in öğrenciyim. One form for English “will” and “going to”. After a stem that ends in a vowel, add the linking y: okuyacak, bekleyecek. Before an ending that starts with a vowel, k → ğ (as in kulak → kulağım): • ben geleceğim, biz geleceğiz; • sen geleceksin, o gelecek, siz geleceksiniz, onlar gelecekler. The stress is on the syllable with -acak / -ecek: gideCEğim, geleCEKsin. Remember: gitmek → gidecek, etmek → edecek, yemek → yiyecek. Negative: -mayacak / -meyecek: gelmeyeceğim, almayacak. In the negative the stem doesn't change: gitmeyecek, etmeyecek, yemeyecek. Question: the particle is separate, and the personal ending goes on it, as in the present: Gelecek misin? Alacak mısınız? (The past was different: Geldin mi?) For plans in the near future you can also use the present tense; both are correct: Cuma günü dönüyorum. = Cuma günü döneceğim. Common mistakes: • ×gelecekim → geleceğim; • ×gelecekmisin, ×geleceksin mi → gelecek misin; • ×okuacak → okuyacak; • ×gidmeyecek → gitmeyecek.
The future tense: affirmative, negative, question

In a question the particle stands apart, and the personal ending goes on it.
