Who loves what: 爱, 有的, and 都

This lesson is for talking about your free time, your pets, and which of your friends likes what. 爱 + action — “love (doing)”, stronger than 喜欢: 我爱唱歌。(Wǒ ài chàng gē.) A degree word goes before 爱, not after the verb as in English “I like singing a lot”: 很爱 (hěn ài). 有的…,有的… — “some …, others …”: 有的人爱看电影,有的人爱看电视。(Yǒude rén ài kàn diànyǐng, yǒude rén ài kàn diànshì.) The topic can come before 有的: 学生有的喜欢,有的不喜欢。(Xuéshēng yǒude xǐhuan, yǒude bù xǐhuan.) 有些 means the same as 有的. 都 — “all, both”: it goes after the people you mean and before the verb, like 也: 他们都在家。(Tāmen dōu zài jiā.) “They're all at home.” Animals are counted with 只: 一只猫 (yì zhī māo), 两只狗 (liǎng zhī gǒu), 几只?(Jǐ zhī?) — not 个. 看电影 (kàn diànyǐng), 看电视 (kàn diànshì), 唱歌 (chàng gē), 听歌 (tīng gē); 好听 (hǎotīng) is about a song or a voice, 好玩儿 (hǎowánr, = 好玩) about a fun place or game. Common mistakes: • ×都我们喜欢猫。→ 我们都喜欢猫。(Wǒmen dōu xǐhuan māo.) • ×我有一个狗。→ 我有一只狗。(Wǒ yǒu yì zhī gǒu.) • ×我爱很唱歌。→ 我很爱唱歌。(Wǒ hěn ài chàng gē.)
