I can say where things are: on the table, under the bed, in the bag, next to the house, in front of the bank, behind the school, in the middle of the room, on the right and on the left.
Stolning ustida: what is where
Stolning ustida: what is where
English “on”, “under”, “behind”, “next to” are not prepositions in Uzbek but place words — nouns placed after the thing: usti “top”, tagi “bottom”, ichi “inside”. All the words of the set are in the table.
To say “where”, you put together three parts you know: “of what” with -ning, the place word with the “his / her” ending, and -da:
• stolning ustida — on the table (literally “at the top of the table”)
• uyning yonida — next to the house
• sumkaning ichida — in the bag
You can leave out -ning: stol ustida is also correct. But you can't leave out the endings of the place word.
The words oʻng (“right”) and chap (“left”) work differently: oʻng tomonda — on the right, chap tomonda — on the left.
The order is as with “whose” (Rustamning kitobi): first “of what”, then the place word.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “ustida stol” → stolning ustida
• NOT “stolning ustda” → stolning ustida
• NOT “uy yonda” → uyning yonida
Place words
The first column is the word itself; the second is its “where” form.
| Word | “Where” | In English |
|---|---|---|
| usti | ustida | on, above |
| tagi | tagida | under |
| ichi | ichida | in, inside |
| yoni | yonida | next to, near |
| oldi | oldida | in front of |
| orqasi | orqasida | behind |
| oʻrtasi | oʻrtasida | in the middle |
| roʻparasi | roʻparasida | across from, opposite |
| oʻng | oʻng tomonda | on the right |
| chap | chap tomonda | on the left |
Three parts: of what + place word + “where”
You can leave out -ning, but not the endings of the place word.
| Of what | Place word + “his / her” + -da | Together |
|---|---|---|
| stol + ning | ust + i + da | stolning ustida |
| uy + ning | yon + i + da | uyning yonida |
| uy + im + ning | yon + i + da | uyimning yonida |
| stol (no -ning) | ust + i + da | stol ustida |
