Since when, how long ago, and from what day

Since when, how long ago, and from what day

Work talk is time talk: since when, how long ago, what comes after what, from what day things change. Five prepositions do this, all with the dative (Dativ). The questions: Seit wann …? (since when), Wie lange …? (how long), Ab wann …? (from when on), Wann …? (when). • seit — it started earlier and still goes on, so German uses the present where English says “I've worked here for three years”: Ich arbeite seit drei Jahren hier. English “for” and “since” are both seit, never für. • vor — “… ago”, but it comes before the time phrase; the event is over, the verb is in the past: Vor zehn Minuten hat der Chef angerufen. Vor also means “before” an event: vor der Besprechung, vor dem Urlaub. • nach — “after”: nach der Arbeit, nach dem Mittagessen. • zwischen — “between … and …”: zwischen zwei und drei Uhr. • ab — “from … on”, for what's still ahead: ab Montag, ab acht Uhr. The dative plural adds -n: drei Jahren, zwei Monaten, vier Tagen. Days of the week, months, and clock times take no article: ab Mittwoch, ab September, ab neun Uhr. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ich arbeite hier vor drei Jahren” → Ich arbeite hier seit drei Jahren. • NOT “Seit zwei Jahren habe ich hier gearbeitet” → Seit zwei Jahren arbeite ich hier. • NOT “nach die Arbeit” → nach der Arbeit. • NOT “Vor zwei Jahre” → Vor zwei Jahren. • NOT “ab acht bis zehn Uhr” → von acht bis zehn Uhr.
Five time prepositions

All five take the dative.
