Lesson 4. What time is it: 시 and 분, 에, 부터 / 까지

I can ask and say what time it is — 몇 시예요? — 다섯 시 반이에요 — and say when something starts and until when it lasts: 열 시부터 한 시까지.

What time is it: 시 and 분, 에, 부터 / 까지

What time is it: 시 and 분, 에, 부터 / 까지

What for: to agree on when things start and end. “What time is it?” — 몇 시예요? Time uses both number systems at once: hours are native Korean with the counter 시: 한 시, 두 시, 세 시, 네 시, 열두 시; minutes are Sino-Korean with 분: 오 분, 삼십 분. Half past is 반: 다섯 시 반. 오전 is a.m., 오후 is p.m., and in Korean they come before the time: 오후 두 시. Hours go up to 12: 14:00 is 오후 두 시, 18:00 is 오후 여섯 시. “At what time?” — time + 에: 세 시에 와요. “From … to …” — 부터 … 까지: 열 시부터 한 시까지. No 에 with 오늘, 내일, 지금, just as English says “at three” but plain “today”: 내일 가요. The present with a word like “tomorrow” also talks about the future, as in English “I'm going tomorrow”: 내일 서울에 가요. 두 시 is “two o'clock”; 두 시간 is “two hours”: 두 시간 읽어요. Common mistakes: • NOT 삼 시 → 세 시 • NOT 세 분 → 삼 분 • NOT 오늘에 → 오늘 • NOT 두 시간에 시작해요 → 두 시에 시작해요 • NOT 세 시 오후 → 오후 세 시
Hours and minutes: two number systems

The hour works like age, the minute like price.
