Lesson 5. Қазір қайдасыз? The present of the moment: отыр, тұр, жүр, жатыр
I can say where I am right now and what I'm doing — sitting, standing, walking, lying down — and not mix up тұрмын “I'm standing” with тұрамын “I live”.
Where you are right now: отыр, тұр, жүр, жатыр
Where you are right now: отыр, тұр, жүр, жатыр
Why: to say where you are and in what position right now. Time words: қазір, дәл қазір, әлі. This is the present of the moment.
Four verbs: отыр “is sitting”, тұр “is standing”, жүр “is walking, is on the move”, жатыр “is lying”. English says “I'm sitting”; Kazakh says отырмын.
The personal ending is the same as in “Мен дәрігермін” and goes right onto these words: отырмын, тұрсың, жүрсіз, жатырмыз. All the forms are in the table.
He, she, they — no ending: Ол отыр. Олар жүр. Kazakh says this about things too: телефон сөмкенің ішінде жатыр, велосипед есіктің алдында тұр.
Questions take the particle after the form: Сіз отырсыз ба? Ол тұр ма?
Don't confuse: тұрамын — “I live” and “I usually stand”; тұрмын — “I'm standing now”. “Lives” is only тұрады.
The negative of these forms comes at the next level.
Common mistakes:
• ×Мен көшеде тұр → Мен көшеде тұрмын: the personal ending is needed.
• ×Мен қазір көшеде тұрамын (if you are standing there now) → тұрмын.
• ×Ол жатырды → Ол жатыр: “he, she” has no ending.
Sitting, standing, walking, lying — right now
The personal ending goes straight onto the word; “he, she, they” have none.

Тұрамын and тұрмын
One letter apart, and the meaning is different.
