Lesson 4. Pretérito indefinido (the preterite): the e/j group and biographies
I can tell someone's life story: quiso, vino, dijo, trajo, nació, se casó, murió — without saying “dijieron”.
The second group: -i- and -j-
quise, vine, dije, traje
Four more common verbs for stories. The endings are the same as for tuve — only the stem changes.
Stems: querer → quis-, venir → vin-, decir → dij-, traer → traj-. Endings: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. No accent mark.
The j rule: if the stem ends in -j-, the ellos form loses the i: dijeron, trajeron. NOT “dijieron”, NOT “trajieron”.
A life story follows a set order, shown in the table above: nació en… → estudió… → trabajó de… (worked as…, no article) → se casó con… → tuvo … hijos → escribió… → murió en…
Personal a, which English lacks: before a person who is the direct object, put a — Visitó a sus abuelos. Not before a thing or a place: Visitó el museo. casarse still takes con (English “married Jorge” has none): Se casó con Jorge.
For morir a life story needs two forms: murió, murieron. The full conjugation of such verbs comes later.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Fue nacido en 1927” — correct: Nació en 1927.
• NOT “Ellos dijieron su nombre” — correct: Ellos dijeron su nombre.
• NOT “Yo viné a España” — correct: Yo vine a España.
• NOT “Ayer nosotros venimos” — in the past: vinimos; venimos is the present.
• NOT “Se casó a Jorge” — correct: Se casó con Jorge.
• NOT “Visitó sus abuelos” — correct: Visitó a sus abuelos.
• NOT “El escritor morió joven” — correct: El escritor murió joven.
The second group: -i- and -j- stems
After a -j- stem, the “they” form drops the i: dijeron, trajeron.
| Infinitive | Stem | él · ella | ellos · ellas |
|---|---|---|---|
| querer | quis- | quiso | quisieron |
| venir | vin- | vino | vinieron |
| decir | dij- | dijo | dijeron |
| traer | traj- | trajo | trajeron |
