I can read a notice in the stairwell and understand who put it up, what is happening and when, what the residents are asked to do, and what isn't allowed from now on.
What an Aushang is
What an Aushang is
Every tenant reads a notice in the stairwell, and it's always written the same way. It's put up by the property management (die Hausverwaltung) or the building superintendent (der Hausmeister), and it hangs in the stairwell — im Treppenhaus, by the entrance or by the elevator.
At the top is who's writing, then the date and time, then the news itself, and after that requests and prohibitions: a request starts with “Bitte …”, a prohibition with “… ist verboten” or with “keine …”. At the bottom is the signature: “Ihre Hausverwaltung”.
Learn three phrases from such notices as a whole: ab sofort — “starting now, from today”, bis auf Weiteres — “until further notice”, außer Betrieb — “out of order”, as on an elevator or a machine (never word for word “aus Ordnung”).
Read the notice twice: first all the way through, then look for the dates, the times, and the word “Bitte” — that's where it says what you're asked to do.
