I can talk about completed events in the past — ayer trabajé, la semana pasada comimos — and recognize past-tense time expressions.
What happened and is over
Pretérito indefinido
Pretérito indefinido (the preterite) is the tense for telling a story: the event happened and is over. Use it for what happened yesterday, last week, last year, like the English simple past.
Time expressions that call for this tense: ayer, anoche, hace dos días, la semana pasada, el mes pasado, el año pasado, el fin de semana pasado.
The endings are in the table above. -ar: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron. -er and -ir share the same endings: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.
The accent mark changes the meaning: trabajo — I work (now), but trabajó — he worked (yesterday). In the yo and él forms the stress falls on the last syllable; English speakers easily miss it, so stress the end and write the mark.
In -ar and -ir verbs the nosotros form is the same as in the present: trabajamos, salimos. The time expression shows the tense: Hoy trabajamos en casa. — Ayer trabajamos en casa.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ayer yo hablo con María” — correct: Ayer hablé con María.
• NOT “hable” for “I spoke” — correct: hablé.
• NOT “La semana pasada ella comieron” — correct: ella comió.
• NOT “Anoche nosotros salió” — correct: nosotros salimos.
• NOT “Ayer vosotros comió” — correct: vosotros comisteis.
Pretérito indefinido (the preterite): regular verbs
-er and -ir verbs have the same endings. In the yo and él forms, the stress falls on the end of the word.
