Lesson 3. Where you're from: 「オーストラリアからきました」, the particle も, countries and languages

I can say where I came from and where I live now, name my nationality and language, and pick up someone else's line with the word “too”.

Where I'm from: から and the word “too”

Where I'm from: から and the word “too”

The goal of this lesson: say where you're from, your nationality, what language you speak, and where you live. The particle から (“from”) goes after the place, not before it as English “from” does: オーストラリアから. Then comes the set form きました (“came”), or just です: オーストラリアからきました, オーストラリアからです. Don't change きました for now: it simply says you came. Nationality and language are built from the country name: country + じん is a person, country + ご is a language. The exception: the language of the US and the UK is えいご; there's no word アメリカご. Australia's language is えいご too. なにじん asks about nationality, not about how many people. The particle も means “too” and replaces は: イリーナさんもロシアじんです. は and も never go together, and も doesn't go at the end like English “too”. Where you live now: いま、【city】にすんでいます — a whole phrase; take it as it is and change only the city. Questions on this topic: なにじんですか (what nationality) and なにごですか (what language). Common mistakes: • NOT わたしはもオーストラリアじんです。 — only も: わたしもオーストラリアじんです。 • NOT アメリカごができますか。 — the language of the US is えいご. • NOT ロシアじんからきました。 — before から comes a country, not a person: ロシアからきました。
Country, person, language

Country + じん is a person, country + ご is a language. The language of the US and the UK is えいご.
