Lesson 4. Stem-changing verbs: e→ie and o→ue

I can talk about my day with verbs whose stem changes under stress — empiezo, vuelvo, duermo, me despierto — and keep the stem unchanged in the nosotros and vosotros forms.

When the stem changes

Verbos con cambio de raíz

The most common verbs of the day (“I start”, “I come back”, “I sleep”, “I wake up”) take the regular endings, but their stem changes when stressed. The whole rule: the stem changes in ALL persons except nosotros and vosotros; there the stress moves to the ending, and the stem stays as in the infinitive. All the forms are in the table below. e → ie: empezar gives empiezo, empiezas, empieza, empiezan — but empezamos, empezáis. The reflexive despertarse works the same way: me despierto, te despiertas, se despierta, se despiertan, but nos despertamos, os despertáis. o → ue: volver gives vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, vuelven — but volvemos, volvéis; dormir gives duermo, duermes, duerme, duermen — but dormimos, dormís. Acostarse too: me acuesto, but nos acostamos — the promised rule. Not every verb does this: terminar, trabajar, comer, vivir keep their stem. It depends on the verb; dictionaries mark it. Home: volver a casa — “to come back home”. Unlike English “go home”, Spanish needs a, with no article. Common mistakes: • NOT “Nosotros empiezamos” — correct: empezamos. • NOT “Nosotros vuelvemos” — correct: volvemos. • NOT “Nos despiertamos” — correct: nos despertamos. • NOT “Yo dormo” — correct: duermo. • NOT “Nos acuestamos” — correct: nos acostamos.
