How to say the date

The date, the month, and birthdays

Dates come up when you arrange to meet or wish someone a happy birthday. One formula: el + number + de + month (+ de + year). The day comes first in figures too: in Spain 10/5 is el diez de mayo, not October 5. Use a regular number, not an ordinal as in English “the tenth of May”: el diez de mayo, el veintiuno de diciembre. The first of the month works like the rest: el uno de agosto. In Latin America people say el primero de agosto. Use the article: el diecinueve de agosto (after Hoy es it is optional). English “August 19” has none. en or el: only a month — en septiembre; a full date — el ocho de septiembre, with no preposition, unlike English “on September 8”. Months are written in lowercase, unlike English: enero, marzo. The year is added with de: el once de noviembre de 1990. Question and greeting: ¿Qué día es hoy? ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? ¡Feliz cumpleaños! The marks ¿…? and ¡…! go at both ends. • NOT “Enero” — correct: enero. Letters: j in junio and julio sounds like ch in Scottish “loch”, never the j of “jam”; g in agosto is the hard g of “go”; ñ in cumpleaños is the ny of “canyon”.
Twelve months
