I can say where a thing is: սեղանի վրա, աթոռի տակ, պայուսակի մեջ, պատուհանի մոտ, պահարանի կողքին — and that the key is with me: ինձ մոտ.
Where it is: the -ի form and վրա, տակ, մեջ, մոտ, կողքին
Where it is: the -ի form and վրա, տակ, մեջ, մոտ, կողքին
What for: to say where a thing is and whose place you're at.
An English preposition comes before the noun; an Armenian postposition comes AFTER it: “on the table” is սեղանի վրա, literally “table's on”. The word before a postposition takes the familiar “whose” form in -ի.
Five postpositions: վրա — on, տակ — under, մեջ — in, inside, մոտ — at, near, կողքին — next to. Examples are in the table.
մեջ and -ում often mean the same: պահարանի մեջ = պահարանում. In գիրք the vowel ի drops: գրքի մեջ = գրքում. The word տուն is special: տան մոտ.
“At someone's” is մոտ; -ում never goes on people. For example, եղբորս մոտ — “at my brother's”. “With me” is the set phrase ինձ մոտ (Հեռախոսդ ինձ մոտ է). It means “on me, at my place”, not “I have”.
կողքին can also stand alone: Այգին կողքին է — “the park is nearby”.
վերև, ներքև, ներս, դուրս answer “where to?” with no ending; “where?” is վերևում, ներքևում, ներսում.
Written ջ, heard [tʃʰ]: մեջ. Written ղ, heard [χ]: կողքին.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “վրա սեղան”, “մեջ պայուսակ” → սեղանի վրա, պայուսակի մեջ.
• NOT “սեղան վրա” → սեղանի վրա.
• NOT “Ինձ մոտ մեքենա կա” for “I have a car” → Ես մեքենա ունեմ.
Five postpositions of place
The postposition comes after the word, and the word before it takes the -ի form.
| Postposition | Translation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| վրա | on | սեղանի վրա |
| տակ | under | աթոռի տակ |
| մեջ | in, inside | պայուսակի մեջ |
| մոտ | at, near | պատուհանի մոտ |
| կողքին | next to | պահարանի կողքին |
Where to and where
“Where to”: the word with no ending; “where”: with the ending -ում.
| Where to | Where |
|---|---|
| վերև — up | վերևում — upstairs |
| ներքև — down | ներքևում — downstairs |
| ներս — in | ներսում — inside |
| դուրս — out | only “where to” |
