I can say where I'm from and where I'm coming from, until what time I work, and what I do after work: put a word in the ablative and use дейін and кейін.
Where from: the ablative and the words дейін, кейін
Where from: the ablative and the words дейін, кейін
Why: to say where you're from or coming from, and from whom you heard it. The questions are қайдан? “where from?” and кімнен? “from whom?”. In Kazakh, “from” and “out of” are one ending. This form is the ablative.
• -дан / -ден — after vowels and р, л, й, у, з, ж;
• -тан / -тен — after voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д;
• -нан / -нен — after м, н, ң.
“I'm from …”: add the personal ending to this form — Мен Америкаданмын, Сіз қайдансыз? — the set phrase you already know is built this way. For “he, she”, no ending: Ол Астанадан.
Pronouns: менен, сенен, сізден, одан, бізден, олардан.
Some English prepositions are postpositions in Kazakh: they stand AFTER the word. дейін “until” comes after the “where to” form: сенбіге дейін. кейін “after” comes after the “where from” form: мектептен кейін. “From … to …”: Алматыдан Астанаға дейін. Алыс — “far from”: үйден алыс.
Countries: Өзбекстан — Uzbekistan, Қырғызстан — Kyrgyzstan, Қытай — China, Түркия — Turkey, Германия — Germany. In Өзбекстан and Қырғызстан the root names the people and -стан means “country”; learn the other pairs, such as Германия — неміс, as a whole. See the table.
Common mistakes:
• ×мектептің кейін → мектептен кейін: not “whose” but “where from”.
• ×кейін мектеп → мектептен кейін: the postposition comes after.
• ×Қазақстандан → Қазақстаннан.
Where from, from whom: endings
The hard or the soft form: the last syllable of the word decides. The word банк is an exception: it takes soft endings, as in банкте.

| voiceless; б, в, г, д | -тан: саябақтан | -тен: университеттен |
| м, н, ң | -нан: маманнан | -нен: мұғалімнен |

“He, she, they” take no personal ending. You'll learn the form “we're from…” later.
| Who | from Astana | from whom |
