I can describe a person and a thing — նոր տուն, խելացի աղջիկ, Տունը մեծ է — and name my own job and my family's.
What kind? The describing word comes first
What kind? The describing word comes first
What for: to describe a person or a thing and to name a job.
The describing word comes before the noun and never changes, as in English: նոր տուն, նոր տներ, իմ նոր տունը (the article goes on the noun).
“The house is new” takes the linking verb: Տունը նոր է։ Տները նոր են։ The words շատ and մի քիչ come before the describing word: շատ մեծ, մի քիչ հին.
Two questions: ինչպիսի՞ + a noun, “what kind of …?” — Ինչպիսի՞ գիրք է դա։ (What kind of book is that?) and ինչպիսի՞ն է, “what is it like?” — Ինչպիսի՞ն է քո քաղաքը։ (What is your city like?) You ask about a job with ի՞նչ: Ի՞նչ է նրա մասնագիտությունը։ (What is his profession?)
• մեծ եղբայր — older brother, փոքր քույր — younger sister.
• For things, հին and նոր; for people, տարեց and երիտասարդ.
• A job takes the linking verb, no article, and no մի for English “a”: Հայրս հաշվապահ է։ For a woman, both վաճառող and վաճառողուհի.
Written ≠ heard: բարձր — written ձ, heard [tsʰ]; թարգմանիչ — written գ, heard [kʰ]; երիտասարդ — written դ, heard [tʰ].
Common mistakes:
• NOT “նորեր տներ” → նոր տներ.
• NOT “Նա տուն մեծ ունի” → Նա մեծ տուն ունի։
• NOT “Դասը հետաքրքիր” → Դասը հետաքրքիր է։
