I can review the module: tell apart the three “can”s and the two 了s, keep 不 and 没 apart, and talk about school, work, and the weekend.
What we review
What we review
A summary of the module — no new rules; you've used every point already.
• English “can” is three words in Chinese: 可以 — may, it's allowed; 能 — be able to, have the chance; 会 — know how to.
• Two 了: “it has become” — after an adjective, with weather, the time and age (现在八点了。Xiànzài bā diǎn le.); “done” — after a verb, then how many and what.
• 不 — don't, won't; 没 — didn't, and it takes no 了. Something done each time, regularly (每…都), takes no 了, even in the past, where English uses the past tense: 去年我们每个星期六都去公园。(Qùnián wǒmen měi gè xīngqīliù dōu qù gōngyuán.)
• 也 and 还 link sentences, 和 only words; 都 and 也 go before the verb; 对 + person + 很好; animals are counted with 只.
Now you can talk about school and work, what you can do and love doing, and what you did on the weekend.
Three “can”s: 可以, 能, 会
Permission, possibility, skill — three different words.
| Word | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 可以 (kěyǐ) | may, allowed | 这儿可以坐吗?(Zhèr kěyǐ zuò ma?) |
| 能 (néng) | have the chance, can | 下午我能休息。(Xiàwǔ wǒ néng xiūxi.) |
| 会 (huì) | know how (learned) | 伊万会开出租车。(Yīwàn huì kāi chūzūchē.) |
Two 了s: change and completion
Both go after what they're about, but they mean different things.
| 了 | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| the 了 of change | now it's …, it has become … | 天气热了。(Tiānqì rè le.) |
| the 了 of completion | done; after the verb + how many + what | 我买了三个包子。(Wǒ mǎile sān gè bāozi.) |
不 or 没
不 — don't, won't; 没 — didn't.
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 不 | don't, won't | 我不喝咖啡。(Wǒ bù hē kāfēi.) |
| 没 | didn't do | 我今天没喝茶。(Wǒ jīntiān méi hē chá.) |
