Lesson 4. Yesterday, now, just now: time expressions and the passé récent (venir de + infinitive)
I can place events in time: say what happened the day before yesterday and yesterday, what's happening now, and what I've just done, and talk about my day in order — d'abord, puis, alors.
The timeline: yesterday, now, and just now
The timeline: yesterday, now, and just now
To tell a story, you put events in time order: what happened earlier, what is happening now, and what has just finished.
The timeline is short: avant-hier — hier — aujourd'hui — demain. The time expression chooses the form: with a past one (hier, ce matin, avant-hier, la semaine dernière, le mois dernier) use the passé composé; with one for now or a habit (maintenant, aujourd'hui, d'habitude, souvent, le samedi), the présent (present tense).
“Have just done” is venir in the present tense plus de plus the infinitive: Je viens de finir — “I've just finished”. Only venir changes: je viens de, tu viens de, il vient de, nous venons de, vous venez de, ils viennent de.
venir de is about minutes ago, not yesterday. For yesterday, use the passé composé.
Three words keep the story in order: d'abord — the first action, puis — the next one, alors — what happened because of it.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “J'ai juste fini” — Je viens de finir.
• NOT “Avant-hier, il vient de rentrer” — Avant-hier, il est rentré.
• NOT “Souvent, j'ai mangé chez mes parents” — Souvent, je mange chez mes parents.
• NOT “Je viens partir” — Je viens de partir: the de is required.
• NOT “La semaine dernière, il regarde un film” — La semaine dernière, il a regardé un film.
The timeline
The time expression in the sentence shows where the event is on the line.
| avant-hier | hier | aujourd'hui | demain |
|---|---|---|---|
| the day before yesterday | yesterday | today | tomorrow |
| passé composé | passé composé | présent, venir de | — |
The time expression chooses the form
Left — the past; right — the present and habits.
| Past time expressions — passé composé | Time expressions for the present and habits — présent |
|---|---|
| hier | maintenant |
| ce matin | aujourd'hui |
| avant-hier | d'habitude |
| la semaine dernière | souvent |
| le mois dernier | le samedi |
venir de plus the infinitive — “have just”
Only the form of venir changes; de and the infinitive stay together: Je viens de sortir.
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| je | viens de |
| tu | viens de |
| il, elle | vient de |
| nous | venons de |
| vous | venez de |
| ils, elles | viennent de |
