I can say what I do before and after work and in what order I get ready for a trip, and ask what someone else does before bed.
Before and after: -기 전에 and -(으)ㄴ 후에
Before and after: -기 전에 and -(으)ㄴ 후에
What for: to say in what order you do things. The “before / after what” part comes first, then the main action.
“Before”: the stem + -기 전에, one form for all: 읽기 전에, 먹기 전에, 만들기 전에.
“After”: -ㄴ 후에 after a vowel (간 후에, 한 후에) and -은 후에 after a consonant (읽은 후에). ㄹ-stem verbs drop ㄹ: 만들다 → 만든 후에; in ㄷ-irregular verbs (like 듣다) ㄷ becomes ㄹ: 듣다 → 들은 후에; regular verbs that end in ㄷ, such as 닫다, don't change: 닫다 → 닫은 후에. -(으)ㄴ here is simply part of this construction. Instead of 후에 you can say 뒤에, with the same meaning.
The past goes only at the end: 밥을 먹은 후에 텔레비전을 봤어요. English puts the past on both verbs (“after I ate, I watched”); Korean only on the last.
With a noun: 점심 전에, 방학 후에 — the reverse of English “before lunch”. With a length of time: 삼 년 전에 — “three years ago”, 한 시간 후에 — “in an hour”.
먼저 is “first”. 때 after a noun means “the time of”: 휴가 때, 방학 때.
Common mistakes:
• NOT 먹기 후에 → 먹은 후에; NOT 먹은 전에 → 먹기 전에.
• NOT 만들은 후에 → 만든 후에.
• NOT 가은 후에 → 간 후에.
• NOT 먹었은 후에 → 먹은 후에 (the past goes at the end).
Before and after
-기 전에 is one form for all verbs. In “after”, 으 comes only after a consonant.
| Dictionary form | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| 읽다 | 읽기 전에 | 읽은 후에 |
| 먹다 | 먹기 전에 | 먹은 후에 |
| 만들다 | 만들기 전에 | 만든 후에 |
| 듣다 | 듣기 전에 | 들은 후에 |
| 점심 (noun) | 점심 전에 | 점심 후에 |
