Бос уақыт: what I like doing

Бос уақыт: what I like doing

This lesson is about free time: what you do, what you like doing, and how often. “I like doing” = the dictionary form in -у + the ending -ды / -ді + жақсы көремін or ұнатамын. Where English says “I like swimming”, Kazakh takes the -у form; it acts like a noun and takes the accusative ending: -ды in a hard word, -ді in a soft one. • жазу → жазуды жақсы көремін — I like writing • сөйлесу → сөйлесуді ұнатамын — I like talking with people The person changes only in the last word: ұнатамын, ұнатасың, ұнатасыз, ұнатады, ұнатамыз. “I don't like” — ұнатпаймын, жақсы көрмеймін. A question takes the particle at the end: Сіз кофе ішуді ұнатасыз ба? A favorite activity is named with no ending: Менің сүйікті ісім — сурет салу. How often: әдетте — usually; аптасына екі рет — twice a week (a set phrase: only the number changes). What you do as a hobby: домбырамен айналысамын — I play the dombra (айналысу takes -мен). Common mistakes: • דМен жазу жақсы көремін” → жазуды: the ending is required. • דМаған жазуды ұнатамын” → Мен жазуды ұнатамын. Маған goes only with ұнайды. • דЖақсы көремін сөйлесуді” → the verb comes last, not after “like” as in English.
