Set phrases: what to say in which situation

Learn these everyday phrases as a whole, like single words, and choose them by the situation, not by the translation. Armenian has two words for “you”. To a friend: Բարև, Ինչպե՞ս ես, Ներիր. To an older person, a stranger, your teacher: Բարև Ձեզ, Ինչպե՞ս եք, Ներեցեք. Ձեզ in the greeting takes a capital. Ողջույն suits everyone. By the time of day: Բարի լույս in the morning, Բարի օր in the afternoon, Բարի երեկո in the evening. Բարի գիշեր is only for saying good night. Goodbye: Ցտեսություն always, Առայժմ with friends, Հաջողություն — “good luck”. To “how are you?” you answer Լավ եմ (“fine”) or Վատ չեմ (“not bad”). “Thank you”: Շնորհակալություն or Շնորհակալ եմ; the reply: Խնդրեմ or Չարժե. Two kinds of “please”: Խնդրեմ when you answer thanks or hand something over; Խնդրում եմ when you ask for something, like English “please”. Sorry: Ներիր or Ներեցեք; Ներողություն suits anyone. The reply: Ոչինչ. Writing: the question mark ՞ sits inside the word, over its last vowel (Ինչպե՞ս), and a question ends with the full stop ։. You don't need to type these marks. Common mistakes: • NOT “Բարև, ինչպե՞ս ես” to the teacher → Բարև Ձեզ, ինչպե՞ս եք. • NOT “Խնդրում եմ” in reply to “Շնորհակալություն” → Խնդրեմ or Չարժե. • NOT “Բարի գիշեր” when meeting someone in the morning → Բարի լույս. • NOT “Չարժե” in reply to “Ներեցեք” → Ոչինչ.
With դու and with դուք

To a friend — the left phrase; to an elder, a stranger, or the teacher — the right one.
