I can understand and give directions and requests — “go straight”, “turn right”, “please wait”, “don't go in” — to a friend with сен and to an older person with сіз, and ask the way.
Requests and directions: кел — келіңіз — келме
Requests and directions: кел — келіңіз — келме
Why: to ask, to give directions, to forbid. This is the imperative, the command form.
To a friend (сен): the stem of the verb, without -у: келу → кел, тыңдау → тыңда.
With сіз: -ыңыз / -іңіз after a consonant, -ңыз / -ңіз after a vowel: келіңіз, айтыңыз, тыңдаңыз. To older people, only this form. English commands have no “you”; Kazakh always chooses сен or сіз.
“Don't”: the negative you know, after the stem: -ма / -ме, -ба / -бе, -па / -пе; with сіз, add -ңыз / -ңіз: келме, түсінбе, оянба, айтпаңыз.
More polite — with -шы / -ші at the end, like “please”: келіңізші, тыңдаңызшы. This is how айтыңызшы and қайталаңызшы, which you know, are built.
The stems of жабу and шығу end in п, қ: жап!, шық!, жаппа, шықпа. Before a vowel of the ending they turn back into б, ғ: жабыңыз, шығыңыз.
Four words you already know have another meaning as commands — see the second table.
Directions: тура барыңыз, солға жүріңіз. The question қалай? means “how?”: Мектепке қалай барамын?
Common mistakes:
• ×Жандос аға, айт → Жандос аға, айтыңыз: an older person gets сіз.
• ×шығ! → шық!
• ×жоқ кіріңіз → кірмеңіз: “don't” goes inside the verb.
Requests and “don't”: with сен and with сіз
In шығу and жабу the stem ends in қ and п: шық, жап.
| Verb | сен | сіз | сен: “don't” | сіз: “don't” |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| келу | кел | келіңіз | келме | келмеңіз |
