I can talk not only about “I” and “he” but also about “Hayk”, “the guest”, “the girl”: I'll put the article -ը or -ն on the subject and on a name, and before the linking verb after a consonant I'll choose -ն.
The article: two forms
The article: -ը and -ն
What for: to say “the guest is tired” or “Hayk is busy”. English “the” is a word and never goes on a name; the Armenian article is an unstressed ending, and it goes on names too.
After a consonant: -ը (հյուրը, Հայկը); after a vowel: -ն (տղան, Նարեն).
The subject takes the article, and so does a name: Հայկը բժիշկ է. Նարեն ուսանող է. The word saying who someone is (բժիշկ, ուսանող) has none.
Before the linking verb, a word ending in a consonant also takes -ն: Նա Հայկն է. A set phrase: Նա իմ ընկերն է — “he's my friend”. Learn Քո անունն ի՞նչ է as a whole too.
No article when you address someone (Բարև, Նարե) or after Իմ անունը (Իմ անունը Նարե է); but “I'm Nare” is Ես Նարեն եմ.
After մի (“a, some”), there's no article: Մի տղա հիվանդ է — “a boy is sick”.
Written ≠ heard: in մարդ, տղամարդ you write դ but hear [tʰ]: [mɑɾtʰ]; in աղջիկ you write ղ and ջ but hear [ɑχtʃʰik]. Write as in the word list.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Հայկ բժիշկ է” → Հայկը բժիշկ է (a name as the subject takes the article).
• NOT “Նարեը ուսանող է” → Նարեն ուսանող է (after a vowel, -ն).
• NOT “Նա Հայկը է” → Նա Հայկն է (before the linking verb, -ն).
• NOT “Մի տղան հիվանդ է” → Մի տղա հիվանդ է.
• NOT “Բարև, Նարեն” → Բարև, Նարե.
Two forms of the article
The last letter of the word picks the form, and before the linking verb, the linking verb itself does.
| Word ends in | Article | Examples | Before the linking verb |
|---|---|---|---|
| consonant | -ը | ուսանողը, հյուրը, Հայկը | -ն — Հայկն է |
| vowel | -ն | տղան, Նարեն, Օլգան | the same — Նարեն է |
Where the article is and where it isn't
Whoever you say something about gets the article; a form of address and the name after “Իմ անունը” don't.
| With the article | Without the article |
|---|---|
| a word as the subject (guest, neighbor, girl) | addressing someone — Բարև, Նարե |
| a name as the subject | after the words “Իմ անունը” — Իմ անունը Նարե է |
| “I'm Nare” — Ես Նարեն եմ | the word saying who someone is, before the linking verb — … բժիշկ է |
| — | after the word մի — մի տղա |
