Lesson 2. What happened and what was going on around it: imperfecto (the imperfect) and indefinido (the preterite)
I can tell a story: what was going on at the time (the imperfect, imperfecto) and what happened (the preterite, indefinido) — estaba cenando cuando llamó mi hermana.
What happened and what was going on around it
Two layers of a story about the past
A story about the past has two layers. Indefinido (the preterite) tells what HAPPENED and is over: a step in the plot. Imperfecto (the imperfect) tells what things WERE like: weather, time, age, mood, and what someone was busy doing at that moment. The English simple past covers both.
Events: ayer, una vez, de repente, el año pasado, a las tres. Background and habits: antes, siempre, a menudo, todos los días, mientras.
Model: Llovía y hacía frío. Salí de casa y perdí el autobús. (It was raining and cold. I left the house and missed the bus.) Background first, then two events.
mientras links two ongoing actions, and the imperfect follows it: Mientras yo cocinaba, mi hermano veía la tele.
cuando links an ongoing action and a sudden one: Estaba cenando cuando llamó mi hermana. English “was having” is estaba + gerund, just the imperfect of estar (never estuve); the gerund ends in -ando or -iendo.
One verb, two meanings: El sábado fui al cine (once) — De pequeño iba al cine todos los domingos (regularly).
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Cuando era niño fui al pueblo todos los veranos” — correct: iba al pueblo.
• NOT “Mientras cené, llamó mi madre” — correct: Mientras cenaba, llamó mi madre.
• NOT “Estuve cenando cuando llamó” — correct: Estaba cenando cuando llamó.
• NOT “El sábado pasado iba al cine” — correct: fui al cine.
Two layers of a story
Imperfecto (the imperfect) paints the scene around it; indefinido (the preterite) moves the story forward.
| Layer | When we use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| imperfecto (the imperfect) — background | weather, time, age, mood | Estaba oscuro y hacía frío. |
| imperfecto (the imperfect) — habit | what people did regularly | Antes íbamos al cine los domingos. |
| imperfecto (the imperfect) — in progress | what was going on at that very moment | Estaba cenando en la cocina. |
| indefinido (the preterite) — event | what happened once | Aquel día encontré cien euros en la calle. |
| indefinido — step in the story | what happened next | Salí de casa y cogí un taxi. |
estaba + gerund: “was in the middle of”
Only estar changes, and it follows the -aba rule. The gerund never changes.
| Person | estar in the imperfect (imperfecto) | The whole construction |
|---|---|---|
| yo | estaba | Estaba leyendo. |
| tú | estabas | ¿Estabas durmiendo? |
| él · ella · usted | estaba | Estaba trabajando. |
| nosotros · nosotras | estábamos | Estábamos comiendo. |
| vosotros · vosotras | estabais | ¿Estabais hablando? |
| ellos · ellas · ustedes | estaban | Estaban jugando. |
