Научиться выделять важную информацию с помощью cleft-конструкций 'It was... who/that...' и 'What... is...'.
It-cleft: 'It was John who called', где акцент на 'John'; вместо 'who' для предметов употребляют 'that': 'It was the noise that woke me'. Wh-cleft (pseudo-cleft) начинается с 'What': 'What I need is time', 'What surprised me was his calm'. Глагол после 'What...' Эти конструкции помогают противопоставлять и подчёркивать факты: 'It wasn't me who broke it'. NOT 'It were the children who made the noise' — после 'It' всегда 'was', даже когда выделяется множественное число; верно 'It was the children who made the noise'. NOT 'It was the rain who ruined our trip' — для предметов и событий нужно 'that', не 'who'; верно 'It was the rain that ruined our trip'. NOT 'What I need are more time' — глагол согласуется с 'what', а не с выделяемым словом; верно 'What I need is more time'. NOT 'That I need is more time' — wh-cleft начинается с 'What', не с 'That'.
|---|---|---|
It was … who … | It was the client who insisted on a refund. |
It was … that … | It was a single typo that delayed the shipment. |
What … is / was … | What worried the investors was the drop in bookings. |
All (that) … is … | All the client asked for was a written estimate. |
The reason … is that … | The reason the launch slipped is that the supplier failed. |

Last spring the company promised its investors a new payment app by September. The team called the project a breakthrough, and for three months everything looked calm. The first delay was small: a supplier sent the wrong card readers, and nobody reported it. That silence, not the hardware, was the real problem. When the second delay arrived, the finance team raised the alarm, but the project manager preferred to wait one more week. By August the app was still untested, and the launch was moved to December. Afterwards two versions of the story appeared: the board blamed the supplier, the engineers blamed the schedule. In the review, however, one small oversight stood out — nobody had been asked to watch the timeline. The chief executive took the credit for stopping the launch in time, yet it was a junior tester who had warned the team in July. Nowhere in the reports was that warning mentioned.
