Lesson 6. Ieri, oggi, domani: time expressions, sequence words, and a first story
I can tell, in order, what I did yesterday and what I'm doing tomorrow: I choose the past or the present by the time expression and link events with prima, poi, dopo, and alla fine.
The day before yesterday, yesterday, today, tomorrow
The day before yesterday, yesterday, today, tomorrow
Tell the story of your day and your trip in order.
The timeline: l'altro ieri — ieri — oggi — domani — dopodomani. A part of the day that is over (stamattina, ieri sera) takes the passato prossimo, even if it's today; what is happening now or still ahead (oggi, stasera, domani) takes the present: Stamattina sono uscito presto, oggi resto a casa.
For tomorrow, Italian uses the present, as English does in “I'm going to Rome tomorrow”: Domani vado a Roma, Dopodomani partiamo presto. You don't need a separate future tense yet.
Sequence words: prima … poi … alla fine (first … then … in the end). They open their part of the sentence: Prima ho fatto colazione, poi sono uscito, alla fine sono tornato a casa.
dopo means both “then” and “after”; meaning “after”, it comes right before a word: dopo cena, dopo il lavoro.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Domani sono andato a Roma” → Domani vado a Roma.
• NOT “Ieri vado in centro” → Ieri sono andato in centro.
• NOT “Alla fine ho andato al bar” → Alla fine sono andato al bar.
• NOT “Ho prima fatto colazione” → Prima ho fatto colazione.
Timeline
Finished actions (even this morning) take the past; what is happening now or still ahead takes the present.
| l'altro ieri | ieri | oggi | domani | dopodomani |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L'altro ieri ho lavorato. | Ieri sono uscito. | Oggi resto a casa. | Domani vado a Roma. | Dopodomani partiamo presto. |
Telling things in order
Sequence words go at the start of their part of the sentence.
| Sequence word | Translation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| prima | first | Prima ho studiato italiano. |
| poi | then | Poi sono andato al bar. |
| dopo | after | Dopo cena ho letto. |
| alla fine | in the end | Alla fine sono tornato a casa. |
