I can say what is and isn't somewhere: I put the place word in the -ում form and say կա or չկա.
What's where: -ում and կա
What's where: -ում and կա
What for: to say where things are and what there is where.
“Where” is the ending -ում on a place word: սենյակում, քաղաքում. You know it with cities and countries (Երևանում եմ ապրում); now it goes on any place. This is the locative: the ending does the job of English “in”. After -ա, -ո it is -յում, for example Ամերիկայում. In այգի the ի drops before the ending: այգում.
This ending is only for things and places, never for people. “At home” is the special word տանը; before է, են it is տանն (Ծնողներս տանն են), and before չէ, կա, չկա it is տանը again.
կա is “there is” (one thing), կան “there are” (several); the negative is one word: չկա, չկան. The order: place — thing — կա. The thing before կա takes no article. After a number and after մի քանի: the singular and կա, as in հինգ հարկ կա.
A question keeps the same order; ՞ goes over the last vowel of the word you ask about: Վերելակ կա՞։ Answer: Այո, կա. / Ոչ, չկա.
“There's nobody” is ոչ ոք չկա: two negatives, unlike English.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Գյուղում դպրոց” → Գյուղում դպրոց կա.
• NOT “չի կա” → չկա (one word).
• NOT “հարևանում” (“at the neighbor's”) — -ում never goes on a person.
• NOT “Գյուղում դպրոցը կա” → no article: դպրոց կա.
• NOT “հինգ հարկեր կան” → հինգ հարկ կա.
Where: the ending -ում
After -ա and -ո, յ comes before the ending; in այգի the letter ի drops; տուն is a special word.
| Word | Where |
|---|---|
| սենյակ | սենյակում |
| դպրոց | դպրոցում |
| Ամերիկա | Ամերիկայում |
| այգի | այգում |
| տուն | տանը |
There is and there isn't: կա and չկա
Word order: where — what — կա. The word before կա takes no article.
| What you say | Example |
|---|---|
| there is (+) | Սենյակում սեղան կա։ |
| there isn't (−) | Սենյակում սեղան չկա։ |
| question (?) | Սենյակում սեղան կա՞։ |
| more than one | Սենյակում սեղաններ կան։ |
