I can make an appointment at the town hall or the bank, say what document I need, understand what the clerk asks for, and fill out and sign a form.
Une démarche en quatre étapes
Une démarche en quatre étapes
At the town hall, the prefecture, and the bank, things go in four steps: make an appointment, come with your papers, fill out and sign the form, get the certificate.
There are two ways to say “I need”. Il me faut plus a noun: “Il me faut une attestation.” And avoir besoin de plus a noun: “J'ai besoin d'une photocopie.” English “I need a copy” has no preposition, but after besoin, de is required.
They almost always ask for the same things: une pièce d'identité, un justificatif de domicile, une photocopie, sometimes two photos. All the papers together are le dossier.
You hear the clerk's lines, but you can say some of them yourself: “Vous avez pris rendez-vous ?” • “Remplissez le formulaire, s'il vous plaît.” • “Signez en bas.” • “Votre carte arrive dans trois semaines.”
To wait in line is faire la queue. The service window is le guichet — the same word as for the ticket office at the train station.
Paperwork in four steps
The order is the same at the town hall, the prefecture, and the bank.
| Step | What you do | The phrase you hear |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | make an appointment | Vous avez pris rendez-vous ? |
| Step 2 | bring the documents | Voici mon dossier. |
| Step 3 | fill out and sign the form | Je signe en bas. |
| Step 4 | get the certificate | Votre carte arrive dans trois semaines. |
What they almost always ask for
All the papers together are called le dossier.
| Document | Why they ask for it |
|---|---|
| une pièce d'identité | to check who you are |
| un justificatif de domicile | to confirm where you live |
| une photocopie | to keep a copy in the file |
| deux photos | to stick onto the document |
