I can ask where the pharmacy or the bus stop is, understand the answer — bankanın yanında, otelin karşısında — and say where something is: masanın üstünde, çantanın içinde.
Where is it? Place words
Where is it? Place words
Why: to ask and say where things are, in town and in a room.
In English the place word comes first: next to the bank. In Turkish it comes last, after the noun in the genitive (as in Zeynep'in annesi): bankanın yanında, literally “at the bank's side”.
The place word takes two endings: the “his / her / its” ending and the locative. An n always goes between them: yan + ı + n + da → yanında. After a vowel the “its” ending has an s: arka → arkasında, karşı → karşısında.
Seven words (see the table): yanında — next to, önünde — in front of, arkasında — behind, üstünde — on, altında — under, içinde — inside, karşısında — opposite. Recognize two more: dışında “outside”, arasında “between”: bankayla otelin arasında.
The question is nerede, and the place word goes at the end: Durak nerede? — Marketin önünde.
On a door: Açık — “Open”, Kapalı — “Closed”.
Watch out: ön is “front”, on is “ten”: the dots change the word.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “banka yanında” → bankanın yanında
• NOT “bankanın yanıda” → bankanın yanında
• NOT “yanında bankanın” → bankanın yanında
Place words
The place word comes after the word: “whose” + place word. The endings go on the place word.
| Word | Where? | In English | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| yan | yanında | next to | bankanın yanında |
| ön | önünde | in front of | evin önünde |
| arka | arkasında | behind | otelin arkasında |
| üst | üstünde | on, above | masanın üstünde |
| alt | altında | under | masanın altında |
| iç | içinde | in, inside | çantanın içinde |
| karşı | karşısında | opposite | parkın karşısında |
| dış | dışında | outside (recognition only) | — |
| ara | arasında | between (recognition only) | — |
