I can say where things are — in front of the house, next to the store, on the table, to the right of the bank — and ask where the restroom is.
What is where: place words
What is where: place words
Why: to say where things are — in front of the house, next to the store, on the table, under the chair.
Three parts you already know: the noun in the genitive (-ның, -дың, -тың and their soft partners) + a place word + -нда / -нде: үйдің алдында “in front of the house”, literally “at the house's front”. Unlike English “in front of”, the place word comes AFTER the noun, like a postposition. The word банк takes soft endings here too, as in банкте.
The ten place words are in the table. Жанында and қасында mean the same: “next to, near”. Арасында “between” is for two things: екі ғимараттың арасында.
“On the right” is оң жақта, “on the left” is сол жақта; “to the right of the store” is дүкеннің оң жағында (қ → ғ, as in саябағы).
These forms answer only “where?”: Әжетхана қайда? — Асхананың артында. “Where to” and “where from” with them come at the next level.
Common mistakes:
• ×алдында үйдің → үйдің алдында: the place word comes after the noun.
• ×үстелде үстінде → үстелдің үстінде: the noun before a place word needs the genitive.
• ×дүкеннің жаныда → дүкеннің жанында.
How to build “in front of the house”
First the word in its “whose” form, then the place word in its “where” form.
| Word + “whose” | Place word + “where” | Together | In English |
|---|---|---|---|
| үй + дің | алды + нда | үйдің алдында | in front of the house |
Ten place words
Жанында and қасында mean the same thing.
| Word | The “where” form | In English |
|---|---|---|
| алды | алдында | in front of |
| арты | артында | behind |
| жаны | жанында | next to |
| қасы | қасында | near, by |
| іші | ішінде | inside, in |
| сырты | сыртында | outside |
| үсті | үстінде | on, above |
| асты | астында | under |
| ортасы | ортасында | in the middle |
| арасы | арасында | between |
