I can tell the doctor what hurts and when it started, understand the doctor's instructions, ask for the medicine I need at the pharmacy, and understand how to take it.
At the doctor's and at the pharmacy
At the doctor's and at the pharmacy
You speak to a doctor with դուք; the word բժիշկ goes before the last name, like “Dr.” in English. “At the doctor's” and “to the doctor” are one set phrase, բժշկի մոտ: Նարեն բժշկի մոտ է. Learn it as a whole: in բժիշկ the ի drops before -ի.
The doctor will ask: Որտե՞ղ է ցավում — “Where does it hurt?”, Ե՞րբ սկսվեց — “When did it start?”, Ինչպե՞ս եք Ձեզ զգում — “How are you feeling?” In your answer the answer word comes before the linking verb: Ատամս է ցավում. About yesterday, use the past: Երեկ սկսվեց; “was” is էր.
The doctor's instructions use the familiar -եք form (Նստեք, Եկեք) and պետք է + the dictionary form: Պետք է շատ քնել. “No need to” is պետք չէ.
At the pharmacy, ask with Ինձ … է պետք. Medicine “for” something is named by a word before դեղ, as in English “cough medicine”: հազի դեղ. More words are in the table “At the pharmacy”.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “բժիշկի մոտ”, NOT “բժշկում” → բժշկի մոտ.
• NOT “Ինձ պետք է քնել” → Պետք է քնել (“I need to sleep”: պետք է names no person, so no ինձ).
• NOT “Հաց ունեմ” (about a cough) → Հազ ունեմ (հաց — bread, հազ — cough).
