I can name clothes and colors, give my size, ask to try something on — Bunu deneyebilir miyim? — and explain that it's too big or too small.
Clothes, color, and size
Clothes, color, and size
Why: to name clothes and colors, ask about the size, and try something on.
A color, like any quality, comes before the noun, as in English, and never changes: kırmızı elbise, kırmızı elbiseler. With bir: mavi bir gömlek “a blue shirt”. At the end of a sentence it needs no “is”: Bu etek kısa. — “This skirt is short.”
Six colors are in the table. The question: Ne renk? — “What color?”
The word renkli means “colorful, bright” (renk “color” + -li “with”): renkli bir etek. You only need to recognize it.
Size is beden: Kaç beden? — Otuz sekiz. “Too big” and “too small” use the verb gelmek with bana “to me”: Ayakkabı bana büyük geliyor — “the shoes are too big for me”, küçük geliyor — “too small”.
To ask permission — “May I …?” — add -abilir miyim? or -ebilir miyim? to the verb stem: bak → bakabilir miyim?, gör → görebilir miyim? After a stem ending in a vowel, add a y: dene → deneyebilir miyim? — “May I try it on?” The verb comes last; the personal ending goes on miyim.
Watch out for false friends:
• ceket is a suit jacket or a blazer; a warm outdoor jacket is mont
Common mistakes:
• NOT “gömlek kırmızı bir” → kırmızı bir gömlek
• NOT “Deneyebilirim mi?” → Deneyebilir miyim?
• NOT “Görebilir miyim bu çantayı?” → Bu çantayı görebilir miyim?
Colors
The color comes before the word and doesn't change: kırmızı elbise, kırmızı elbiseler.
| Color | In English |
|---|---|
| beyaz | white |
