Zullen we …? — shall we?

Zullen we …? — shall we?

To suggest doing something together, say Zullen we …? — English “Shall we …?”. Zullen comes first, we second, and the verb for what you suggest goes to the very end, in the infinitive (the dictionary form). English keeps the two verbs together; Dutch splits them: • Zullen we samen eten? • Zullen we vrijdag naar de film gaan? To say yes: Ja, leuk! / Goed idee! / Oké! / Natuurlijk! To say no: Nee, sorry, ik heb geen tijd. / Helaas werk ik dan. If your suggestion is turned down: Jammer! (“Too bad!”). Not sure? Misschien. “I'm going to …” is Ik ga + the infinitive: Ik ga koken (I'm going to cook). Here too the verb goes to the very end: Ik ga morgen koken. For now, use this form when you talk about yourself. Where and what: naar de film, naar de bioscoop — “to the movies”; op het terras — “on the café terrace”; een film over Amsterdam — “a movie about Amsterdam”. To make plans to meet is een afspraak maken. Common mistakes: • ×Zullen we gaan naar de film? → Zullen we naar de film gaan? • ×Zullen we drinken koffie? → Zullen we koffie drinken? • ×Ik ga koken morgen → Ik ga morgen koken.
Zullen we … + the verb at the end

To say “yes”: Ja, leuk! · Goed idee! To say “no”: Nee, sorry … · Helaas … The verb for what's suggested always comes last.
