Lesson 4. Pretérito indefinido (the preterite): ir, ser, estar

I can say where I went and where I was — fui al cine, estuve en casa — and not confuse fui from ir with fui from ser.

1 / 14

Three verbs with their own past forms

fui, fue, estuve

In stories about the past, the three most frequent verbs are irregular: learn their forms whole. All the forms are in the table above. ir (to go) and ser (to be) are identical in the preterite: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron — one set of forms for two verbs. None of the forms has an accent mark: fui, fue, estuve. Write them without one. How to tell ir from ser: ir has a direction, with the preposition a: Fui al teatro (I went to the theater). ser says who or what someone or something was: Fue camarero. Fue un viaje muy largo. estar answers “where were you?” with the preposition en: Estuve en la playa todo el día. English “was” is not always fui: “I was at the beach” is about location, so it takes estar. Common mistakes: • NOT “Fui en el cine” — correct: Fui al cine. • NOT “Fui en la playa todo el día” — correct: Estuve en la playa todo el día. • NOT “Estuve a la playa” — correct: Estuve en la playa. • NOT “Yo fuí” — correct: yo fui, with no accent mark. • NOT “Ayer yo voy al museo” — correct: Ayer fui al museo.
Three special verbs in the past

ir and ser share one set of forms. None of the forms has an accent mark.
